Our Work in Uganda

Farmers have been called upon to embrace vegetable growing as a pathway to higher incomes and a more resilient future.
Through targeted knowledge transfer, access to certified quality inputs, and a pilot program linking farmers to financial institutions, the initiative is addressing the root causes of underproduction.

The Zero Hunger Pledge emerged from the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit in recognition of the need for collaboration across the private and public sectors to fight hunger and accelerate progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goal 2. East-West Seed joined the Pledge in 2022, committing to US$18 million over 5 years in support of livelihood and nutritional security.

As East-West Seed’s implementing partner for this effort, East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation is training smallholder farmers in sustainable vegetable production techniques that help farmers cope with climate change and that increase food security for communities

Omugo Refugee Settlement – Refugees get a vegetable growing boost

"Unless we adopt modern farming technologies in Africa, our farmer's efforts will remain inefficient and we will remain dependent on others to feed us. It is our role to build our economy as farmers" said David Baguma, team leader of EWS-KT Uganda

In 2018 East-West Seed – Knowledge Transfer and the ISSD Plus program teamed up to introduce high quality vegetable seed and good, basic horticultural skills to northern Uganda.

This region had never seen horticulture extension programs, nor trustworthy seed companies, investing in farmer skills. Within 18 months 400 farmer training sites have been set up, and nearly 7000 farmers trained, over half of whom are women.

A large number of farmers adopt the much improved practices while reliable supply lines of high quality seeds are being set up. Traders are also becoming more interested in buying local produce. Farmers in this region are, most for the first time in their lives, properly learning how to productively and profitably grow vegetables.

With the growing number of refugees entering Uganda every day, the general nutrition and food security for both the refugees and the host communities remains a huge challenge.


Most of them mainly depend on the food relief from the world food programme which includes beans, maize flour and cooking oil.


Now, refugees and the host communities in the West Nile region have been advised to adopt off-season vegetable farming to supplement their dietary needs, food security and income generation.
