Women have been an integral part of agriculture for centuries. In Tanzania, women have been involved in agriculture since ancient times. They have played a significant role in the production of vegetables and other crops. Women’s participation rate in the agricultural sectors is about 75% in vegetable production. This article will discuss the role of women in agriculture and how they help farmers to produce vegetables. Women’s participation in agriculture has been increasing over the years. Women are involved in various activities such as sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and processing of vegetables. They also play a crucial role in decision-making related to crop management. Women’s participation in agriculture has helped to increase crop productivity and improve food security. In Tanzania, women are involved in vegetable production on a large scale. They work on small farms and are involved in various activities such as sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and processing of vegetables. Women also play a crucial role in decision-making related to crop management. They are responsible for selecting the right seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides for the crops. Women’s involvement in agriculture has helped to increase crop productivity and improve food security. Women have been able to increase their income by participating in agriculture. They have also been able to improve their social status by contributing to the family income Women’s participation in agriculture has also helped to reduce poverty. Christopher's first task of the day was to check on the crops. He would walk through the fields, inspecting each plant carefully to see if there were any signs of disease or pests. If he found any issues, he would take note of them and report back to the farmers. After checking on the crops, Christopher would spend some time helping the farmers with their daily tasks. This could include anything from watering the plants to harvesting vegetables. Christopher was always happy to lend a hand and enjoyed working alongside the farmers. Around midday, Christopher would take a break for lunch. He would sit down with the farmers and enjoy a meal together. They would talk about their families, their lives, and their hopes for the future. After lunch, Christopher would spend some time organizing his notes and preparing for his next task. This could include researching new techniques for growing vegetables or planning out the next steps for a particular crop. As the day began to wind down, Christopher would start to wrap up his work. He would check in with the farmers one last time before heading home. When he got back to his house, he would spend some time reflecting on his day and thinking about what he could do better tomorrow. And with that, Christopher’s day as a field assistant came to an end. It was hard work, but he loved every minute of it.

Tanzania is currently facing a severe drought, which has had a significant impact on the country’s agricultural sector. According to a report by Reuters, farmers in Tanzania have been forced to switch to crops that require less water, such as vegetables, maize, potatoes, and beans. To cope with the drought, many farmers have also started using drip irrigation systems that use less water to grow their crops. The Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) has been working to address some of the challenges faced by the horticulture sector in Tanzania. TAHA represents 42,000 farmers and its members include producers, exporters, processors, suppliers, and smallholder farmers. The organization has been working to reduce post-harvest losses in the horticulture sector by building the capacity of farmers, connecting them to markets, and developing infrastructure throughout the value chain at critical loss points. Despite these efforts, the horticulture sector in Tanzania still faces several challenges. East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer has been working in Tanzania helping smallholder vegetable farmers overcome the problem with drought. We are working with smallholder farmers to showcase how to conserve water and how to make the best use of available water.

Every year on August 8, Tanzanian farmers and other community members turn out for Nane Nane Day agricultural exhibitions. Also called Farmers’ Day, Nane Nane—which means “eight eight” in Kiswahili, reflecting the month and day it is held—celebrates farmers and their key role in the Tanzanian economy. Nane Nane agricultural fairs are an opportunity for farming-focused companies and organizations to showcase effective techniques and new innovations, and our staff were out in force, welcoming visitors from Mwanza to Mbeya.
