New Learning Farm in Ghana Opens with Mega Field Day

AHAFO REGION, GHANA – A successful Mega Field Day on 22 July marked the launch of our new learning farm in Duayaw Nkwanta, located in Ghana’s Ahafo Region. The learning farm showcases improved vegetable production methods for growing a variety of crops, and it will serve as a knowledge hub for building the capacity of farmers, trainers, and other stakeholders.
Over 300 farmers participated in the Mega Field Day, where they learned about climate-smart vegetable farming practices and heard from fellow farmers about their success with these new techniques. The Duayaw Nkwanta learning farm is part of the Transforming Vegetable Farming as a Business initiative, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Accra.
Also attending the Mega Field Day were agricultural experts from the Ghanaian Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Lasorex, East-West Seed, Demeter Ghana Ltd, Dizengoff Ghana, Sunyani Technical University, Ghana Netherlands Business and Culture Council, IDH, Horticulture Business Platform, and Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO), along with the chief and council of Duayaw Nkwanta township and the Sunyani market queen (the head of the market’s traders).

Marian Armoo, Agriculture Officer from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of agriculture as the cornerstone of bilateral cooperation between Ghana and the Netherlands. Agriculture “ensures food security, creating employment and driving economic development,’’ she said.

Nana Bonsu, chief of Duayaw Nkwanta, ably performed the ribbon cutting to officially open the learning farm.

Tours of the learning farm highlighted techniques like mulching and trellising (seen here); improved ground nurseries and healthy seedling production; protective border crops, sweet traps, and other pest management approaches; and green manuring.
