Women farmers in northern Nigeria play a vital role in agricultural productivity and food security, yet they face several challenges that hinder their potential.

Our recent study of women farmers in Nigeria’s Kaduna and Kano states—the latest chapter in our Women Farmers Study initiative—sheds light on their daily struggles, the opportunities available, and actionable solutions to empower these women to achieve greater success in agriculture.

The Role of Women Farmers

The Women Farmers Study highlights women farmers’ critical role in agriculture, managing farm and household responsibilities. These women work tirelessly to ensure food production and family well-being, but systemic barriers, restrictive norms, and a lack of support often limit their efforts.

Despite the challenges, women farmers in northern Nigeria have access to opportunities that can improve their productivity and income. Key opportunities include:

  • Training and capacity building: Programs like EWS-KT’s provide knowledge on modern farming techniques, pest and disease management, and financial literacy.
  • Access to quality agro-inputs: Availability of quality seeds, fertilizers, and other agro-inputs, along with market linkages, can significantly enhance yields.
  • Community support: Initiatives that foster collaboration among women farmers and connect them to market actors enable them to scale their efforts.

Challenges Women Farmers Face

The report identifies key challenges faced by women farmers in northern Nigeria, including:

  • Limited access to land: Many women lack access to suitable farmland, often relying on rented plots or family-owned lands.
  • Financial constraints: Insufficient funds to hire labor, purchase inputs, or scale up production is a recurring issue.
  • Gender inequality: Social norms often restrict women’s decision-making power and limit their ability to manage farms independently.
  • Knowledge gaps: Many women lack technical knowledge of modern farming practices, reducing their efficiency and yields.
  • Labor shortages: Tasks that require greater physical strength often increase costs, as women must hire labor to accomplish them.

Key Findings from the Study

The study revealed that restrictive social norms and systemic inequalities significantly affect women’s productivity. However, it also highlighted the potential for transformative change through targeted interventions. Addressing these challenges and empowering women with skills, resources, and decision-making authority can revolutionize their contribution to agriculture.

To address these issues, the report suggests the following strategies:

  • Introduce financial structures: Implement savings and loan schemes to provide women with access to credit.
  • Organize training programs: Offer targeted training sessions on pest management, financial management skills, and decision-making.
  • Promote gender awareness: Engage men and communities to challenge restrictive social norms and promote shared responsibilities.
  • Improve access to agro-inputs: Enhance the availability of quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides for women farmers.

The empowerment of women farmers is not just an agricultural imperative—it’s a societal one. By addressing these challenges, we can unlock the potential of women farmers, ensuring better productivity, improved livelihoods, and greater food security.
