KADUNA, NIGERIA – Last week, the 47th National Council on Agriculture and Food Security (NCAFS) took place in Kaduna, Nigeria. Organized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the 5-day meeting was centered around the theme “Food Sovereignty and Food Security in an Era of Renewed Hope.”

This year’s event brought together key players in the agricultural sector—including government agencies and enterprises, private-sector actors, and international development partners—to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s food systems and promoting sustainable growth.

Among those in attendance were the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, the Federal Minister of Agriculture, the Country Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Commissioners of Agriculture from all 36 states. Their collective participation reflects a shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s food security goals.

Our booth at the event focused on the eco-efficient and climate-resilient vegetable farming methods we share with farmers in northern Nigeria. A display of different containers for growing seedlings—including eggshells and leaf pots—caught the attention of visitors, as did our easy-to-understand printed guides, which contain step-by-step instructions on how to sustainably cultivate different vegetables.

During the meeting, we were honored to hear the General Manager of the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Agency acknowledge the contributions of East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation, recognizing our role among development partners in enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across the state.

Equipped with advanced vegetable farming skills and knowledge through our in-person training program and digital learning pathways, the smallholder farmers we work with are key players in achieving the nation’s food sovereignty and food security goals.
