Extension Media Officer

Scope: To support EWS-KT’s indirect outreach by creating engaging digital and offline media content that translates technical knowledge into practical, farmer-friendly communication and strengthens visibility among farmers, partners, and donors.

Travel: 60% travel to project locations

BACKGROUND

East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation (EWS-KT) is a non-profit organization committed to enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder vegetable farmers across Asia and Africa by increasing their skills and knowledge. Operating in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ghana, India, Myanmar, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, EWS-KT works directly with smallholder farmer communities to promote profitable and sustainable vegetable production.

Through practical field-based training sessions, farmer-run demonstration plots, and locally adapted training materials developed with leading experts, EWS-KT empowers farmers with improved agronomic practices, integrated pest management, nutrient and water management, and business skills. With a special focus on women and youth, EWS-KT leverages strong partnerships and innovative digital platforms to drive sustainable agricultural growth in underserved rural communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Extension Media Officer plays a key role in enhancing the visibility of East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation (EWS-KT) India, both on and off the field. The role focuses on translating technical agricultural knowledge into engaging, accessible, and practical digital content that supports farmers in improving production practices. Additionally, the role supports the creation of content to showcase EWS-KT activities and impact to partners and donors.

Working closely with Technical team, field staff, and other teams, the role bridges field-based extension with digital and offline media platforms to amplify farmer learning and showcase impact. The position reports to the India Knowledge Transfer Manager and works in a matrix relationship with the Extension Media Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and manage digital and offline campaigns to onboard farmers onto our communication channels (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook), capturing accurate farmer data.
  • Maintain and moderate farmer-focused digital and offline channels, steering the discussion around sustainable and advanced vegetable production.
  • Plan and schedule digital content (messages, videos, polls) aligned with crop calendars and field activities.
  • Create vlogs using verified technical agronomic content in local languages.
  • Create compelling visual and narrative stories highlighting farmer success, project impact, and best practices.
  • Organize, curate, and manage digital content on the GrowHow website and other digital platforms.
  • Adapt and tailor technical extension materials for different channels, ensuring clarity and ease of understanding for smallholder farmers.
  • Drive indirect outreach through on-field integration of extension media channels.
  • Support the development of multilingual content to ensure inclusivity and wider outreach.
  • Engage directly with farmers and organize surveys to assess farmer needs and improve content relevance.
  • Work closely with the Technical and the field team to convert technical information into farmer-friendly content.
  • Support the development of new content formats aligned with extension goals and platform requirements.
  • Train Technical Field Advisors on basic media skills, including photography, videography, branding guidelines, social media usage, and effective use of extension materials.
  • Coordinate with agro-input dealers to integrate EWS-KT informational elements at retail outlets, supporting farmer education and increasing brand visibility.
  • Prepare, monitor, and maintain the media and communication budget.
  • Track channel performance and contribute to the continuous improvement of EWS-KT’s indirect outreach strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, agriculture, marketing, business, new media, or another relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1–2 years of professional experience in media, communications, or social media marketing.
  • Good working knowledge of both digital and offline media channels, including social media, messaging platforms, websites, mobile applications, and print-based materials.
  • Good understanding of data and analytics, with the ability to use performance insights to improve content and outreach activities.
  • Experience in creating simple videos and visual stories, including basic photography, videography, and editing.
  • Interest in or prior exposure to digital solutions initiatives for smallholder farmers is an advantage.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and at least one local language (Hindi, Assamese, Odia), with good presentation and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to field locations to engage with farmers and support content creation.
  • A team player who can work collaboratively across technical, field, and communication teams.
